Local Earth Day Celebration

Friday, April 20th, 2012

The Clayton County Conservation Awareness Network is planning to celebrate with an Earth Day Gathering this Sunday April 22, 1 p.m. at Turkey River Park in Elkader.

Depending on how many folks show up, we will split up into smaller groups and each group will choose a different natural area to visit and pick up trash or possibly do some vegetation management.

Everyone can choose to what extent they wish to participate, but plan on spending about 3 hours that afternoon. It’s not intended to be a hard core work day, but merely a chance to gather with like minded folks, explore new areas and do a little to give back to the Earth.

For those who have not been there, Turkey River Park is the river access area located next to Hwy 13 in Elkader.

Hope to see you there!

Help assemble food packages for the starving Tomorrow!

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

The annual, Elkader, ecumenical, Kid’s Against Hunger, food packaging event will be held tomorrow, Friday, April 6th at 10 a.m. in the St. Joseph’s Parish Hall, Elkader.

Organizers are thrilled to announce the group raised $4000.00 to purchase ingredients for the Kids Against Hunger food packages.  This year’s collection exceeds last year’s amount by $1000 and the 2010 collection by $1500.

“The generosity of the community never ceases to amaze us,” stated event organizer Jamie Wingert.

Various local churches held soup suppers, can drives, special collections, penny wars and bake sales to raise this year’s record amount.

Reminding interested donors every 20 seconds a child dies from starvation or a disease related to starvation; and of the understanding the world has the ability to end world hunger but lacks the universal will to do so; the group set out to collect donations for their local event.

Kids Against Hunger is a nationwide organization, who, with a team of scientists, has formulated a food package which is specifically designed to aid a human suffering from starvation.  Each serving contains a rich source of easily digestible protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins needed by a malnourished body and mind.  Each package assembled contains six servings and each serving costs just twenty five cents.

A significant labor force will be needed to package the projected more than 2500 food packages, or nearly 16,000 meals, in a timely manner.

“Now that the money has been raised, we are going to need a lot of help getting the packages assembled on Good Friday,” says co-coordinator, Joleen Jansen.  “No matter your age, if you want to do something to help hungry people show up, Friday April 6th at 10 am and hop into one of the five assembly lines.”

Food packagers can bring their own hat to wear, or if a hat is forgotten hair nets will be provided.

The Kids Against Hunger food packages will most likely be sent to starving families in Haiti, Honduras, Ecuador or Nicaragua.

Templeton Rye Feature Length Documentary Plays in Elkader

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

(Des Moines, IA) – Greetings from Modern American Cinema! We are proud to announce Kristian Day’s Capone’s Whiskey: The Story of Templeton Rye will be playing at the Elkader Cinema ONE NIGHT ONLY. Admission is FREE.

Date, Time, and Location:
April 10th at 5PM
Elkader Cinema

Kristian Day’s documentary film chronicles the history of the infamous whiskey cookers of Carroll County, Iowa from their outlaw days of Prohibition to when the liquor became legal in 2006. During the Prohibition Era, west central Iowa farmers cooked whiskey in their barns and machine sheds to supplement their income in the harsh times. The finished product was of such a high quality that it quickly made its way to speakeasies in Chicago, Kansas City, and Omaha through Italian gangster Al Capone. For almost 80 years the product was considered illegal until it was introduced in 2006 as a legal brand of top shelf liquor.
“This film uncovers a part of Iowa’s history that has been kept in the dark for almost a hundred years,” says Day. “I wanted to tell a story of survival and community spirit without taking away the mystique that it has carried with it for so long.”

Day, 26, a native of Rock Island, Ill., went to high school in Cedar Rapids and attended the University of Colorado at Denver in the music industry studies program. In 2008, Day began directing and producing his own movies. His short films have played all over the world including Austria, Greece and Italy. His films have also been screened at various festivals in cities across the United States including Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago.
This movie is the third movie in Day’s MADE IN IOWA documentary series, which has previously included Brent Houzenga: Hybrid Pioneer (about a native of Fulton, IL / available on DVD) and Templeton Rye: Iowa’s Good Stuff (30 minute short), which aired along side the Ken Burns’ series Prohibition on Iowa Public Television this past October and is currently available on Amazon’s Video On Demand. The ongoing series tells the stories of the innovative people, places and ideas that have influenced Iowa’s culture.

Modern American Cinema, LLC is an independent film production & distribution company based in Des Moines, Iowa. Founded in 2010, the company specializes in creating full-feature narratives and educational documentaries for international distribution.
