A Tunes Review: Big Blue Sky

Sunday, July 17th, 2011

This past Wednesday we headed down to the Elkader Opera House to join several sun worn cannoers for an evening concert of Big Blue Sky.  This week was Project A.W.A.R.E. and event in which dozens of canoes made their way down the Turkey River picking up trash out of one of Northeast Iowa treasures.  I heard cannoers were pulling out everything from beer cans to water heaters.  Jon Stravers, the lead singer of Big Blue Sky was the perfect match for the entertainment.   An obvious environmentalist and friend of the land, Stravers songs include many references to the river.  The groovy folk music captured the energy in more ways then one.  Although I was not taking part in the river clean-up, the smell of sunshine was radiating off the concert goers and it felt as if the Opera House had suddenly become an outdoor event.  Some individuals who had spent all day working hard in the sun found themselves with heads bowed, but the music coming from the stage was that in which if you did fall asleep you would have one of the best dream accompaniment there was.  Stravers was joined by a upright bass guitar-Mike Obmascher, harmonica/mandolin-Kevin Dohse, guitar-Folko Landvoght, drummer, and singer Patsy Wellman (a great local musician in her own right).  Jon also brought out the Indian Flute, which made the event magical.

The evening started out with a grove that brought kids and a few adults up out of their seats to dance around.  Photo slide shows of natures beauty were displayed in the background.  Songs were written with heart.  One of my favorite was written to a poem by Brian Gibbs, current Osborne Naturalist, about a cabin on the Turkey River.  Brian was also given the honor of reading one of his poems during the break.  Following an intermission in which people participated in a silent auction for great items the band picked back up with a more bluesy set.  Songs seemed to come from all six of their albums.

As a planet lover Big Blue Sky continues to run their concert schedule in events which help raise money for the preservation of natures bounty.  Yesterday they were at the Yak Festival at the Natural Gait, along the Yellow River and throughout the summer they can be heard on Mississippi River Cruises.  If you would wish to listen to this beautiful music full of spirit, dance, and fun you can do so on their website.  This song Universal Mother highlights all the musicians talents in the band.

Be Aware: Project Aware Starts Tomorrow

Friday, July 8th, 2011

Clayton County Conservation Awareness also known as CAN begins their Project Aware Volunteer River Cleanup along the Turkey River Watershed tomorrow.  The event allows volunteers to float down the river, soaking in the sun, and playing in the mud.  This is not an event for those who don’t like to get dirty, but a great event for those who have a big heart.

One of the highlights of the event will be a Wednesday, July 13, concert at the Elkader Opera House by Big Blue Sky.  The concert is open to the general public, but especially created for those putting in the hard work (feel free to shower before the show).  Jon Stravers, singer and songwriter for Big Blue Sky, is a known environmentalist and is happy to provide this concert for the benefit of the conservation.  The cost of the event is a donation only and a silent auction is held in conjunction with the concert.  For more, you can check out the www.claytoncountycan.com website.

I can’t wait for the Delaware County Fair

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

I can’t wait for the Delaware County Fair and for one reason in particular JOAN JETT!!!  Sweeeeeet.  She is the headlining the fair’s VIP night and you better believe dishntunes.com will be there, along with a lucky winner or two.

But more than Joan Jett, the fair also has Little Big Town coming for our Country lovers and Tenth Avenue North for those who get down with King.  Several local bands and djs will dot the stages and the “tunes” side of dishntunes.com is trembling with anticipation.

Things are Blooming at the McGregor Beer and Brat Garden

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Mississippi waters poured over its banks this year, but this isn’t necessarily a new things for Beer and Brats Garden in McGregor.  Having survived more than one flood already, Andrea McElwaine, owner of the establishment was prepared.  Despite opening later than they had planned (the doors finally were able to open the Wednesday before Memorial Day) Beer and Brats Garden has used the opportunity to add some new items to the store.  While we were visiting the crew was huddled over an ice cream machine that had just come in that day.

“We now have Blue Bunny hard ice cream,” says Andrea, “as well as healthier options.  We have added wraps to the menu and turkey burgers which actually taste really good.”

Beer and Brats Garden has always taken pride in their brats, which they continue to purchase from Edgewood Locker, then grill to perfection.  They’ve even started to add flavored brats to the menu.  The day we visited Pineapple and Jalapeno & Cheddar were the flavors on hand.  Local caught fish fries and ribs are also features on specific nights.

Added to the drink menu is an array of hard alcohol and Andrea’s own hand-made Bloody Marys.  “I make them with 18 special ingredients and they are hot,” she says.  Suddenly Andrea is quick out the door as she sees a boat in need of help at the dock.  This friendly staff not only helps out boaters, they also deliver boat-side with call ahead orders.  Besides seeing employees help on the docks and unpack the new machine, we watched as they got off their shifts and joined loyal customers in card games.  “It says something when an employee doesn’t bolt for the door the minute they are off work.” says Amber, a visiting customer.

Besides great food, my one year old was fascinated with the gently clanging cow bell on the door, the passing trains, the boats whizzing by and his favorite show “Word World” on the tv, which patrons enjoyed watching him dance around to.  I loved the added touches of fresh cut flowers on every table and beautiful watercolors depicting life on the Mississippi for sale on the walls.

Lincoln does Lakeside

Sunday, April 10th, 2011

DishnTunes.com joined the fun at Lakeside Ballroom this weekend, attending Rock the River Road Show.  Our littlest reporter, Lincoln Durbin, had a great time dancing to the golden oldies, watching the twirl of poodle skirts, and playing air guitar alongside Guttenberg’s own outstanding guitar maker, Steve Dikkers.

When Lincoln wasn’t sucking down ketchup on some of the most perfect french fries, he was getting down to “Run Around Sue.”  Check out the video for a child like view of the fantastic night.

Karaoke Championship at the Franklin Hotel

Monday, March 21st, 2011

Laurie sings Let It BeThe Franklin Hotel in Strawberry Point finished up their annual Karaoke Championship, Saturday, March 19.  Thirteen singers were featured who had won previous competitions throughout the year.  This year only three men were chosen to compete amongst ten women.  The event started off at 9 p.m. and your very own DishnTunes.com writer, Shannon Durbin, drew lucky number one.  I sang “Leaving on a Jet Plane” in the style of Peter, Paul, and Mary. A variety of themes followed from Country to Jazz to Rock n’ Roll.

Highlights included Derek Miller singing “Achy Breaky Heart” by Billy Ray Cyrus, while sporting a mullet wig.  His antics brought him the People’s Choice Award at the end of the night.  Winners of the year included Becky Willie, taking home third place.  She did a cut-throat rendition of ”Heartbreaker” by Pat Benatar.  Second went to Brad Gilson, a regular in the Franklin Karaoke scene whose soul searching voice sank deep into the lyrics of slow Country favorites.  The first place winner, and winner of the $500 grand prize, was Miranda Beyer, who sang a perfectly pitched version of ”Torn” by Natalie Imbruglia.

A panel of three judges selected the winners.  They included the Starmont High School Choir director, a former Franklin Karaoke winner, and a music lover from town.

The crowd was wall-to-wall and full of energy for the event.  As an added treat it was revealed that there was a mother and daughter competing against one another in the contest.  Shelby Swanson was not only the daughter of Connie South (both performers) but she was also the aunt of contestant Derek Miller making the whole event a family affair.
