The annual, Elkader, ecumenical, Kid’s Against Hunger, food packaging event will be held tomorrow, Friday, April 6th at 10 a.m. in the St. Joseph’s Parish Hall, Elkader.
Organizers are thrilled to announce the group raised $4000.00 to purchase ingredients for the Kids Against Hunger food packages. This year’s collection exceeds last year’s amount by $1000 and the 2010 collection by $1500.
“The generosity of the community never ceases to amaze us,” stated event organizer Jamie Wingert.
Various local churches held soup suppers, can drives, special collections, penny wars and bake sales to raise this year’s record amount.
Reminding interested donors every 20 seconds a child dies from starvation or a disease related to starvation; and of the understanding the world has the ability to end world hunger but lacks the universal will to do so; the group set out to collect donations for their local event.
Kids Against Hunger is a nationwide organization, who, with a team of scientists, has formulated a food package which is specifically designed to aid a human suffering from starvation. Each serving contains a rich source of easily digestible protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins needed by a malnourished body and mind. Each package assembled contains six servings and each serving costs just twenty five cents.
A significant labor force will be needed to package the projected more than 2500 food packages, or nearly 16,000 meals, in a timely manner.
“Now that the money has been raised, we are going to need a lot of help getting the packages assembled on Good Friday,” says co-coordinator, Joleen Jansen. “No matter your age, if you want to do something to help hungry people show up, Friday April 6th at 10 am and hop into one of the five assembly lines.”
Food packagers can bring their own hat to wear, or if a hat is forgotten hair nets will be provided.
The Kids Against Hunger food packages will most likely be sent to starving families in Haiti, Honduras, Ecuador or Nicaragua.
