Friday, October 7th, 2011Be Aware: Project Aware Starts Tomorrow
Friday, July 8th, 2011
Clayton County Conservation Awareness also known as CAN begins their Project Aware Volunteer River Cleanup along the Turkey River Watershed tomorrow. The event allows volunteers to float down the river, soaking in the sun, and playing in the mud. This is not an event for those who don’t like to get dirty, but a great event for those who have a big heart.
One of the highlights of the event will be a Wednesday, July 13, concert at the Elkader Opera House by Big Blue Sky. The concert is open to the general public, but especially created for those putting in the hard work (feel free to shower before the show). Jon Stravers, singer and songwriter for Big Blue Sky, is a known environmentalist and is happy to provide this concert for the benefit of the conservation. The cost of the event is a donation only and a silent auction is held in conjunction with the concert. For more, you can check out the www.claytoncountycan.com website.

LIVE Music Alive and Well at Lansing’s the Other Place
Friday, April 16th, 2010Recently, I had the chance to meet Jeff Bechtel, owner of the Other Place, in downtown Lansing. From the outside, to the uninformed, with its rather unassuming exterior, the Other Place looks like your typical lazy tavern. But upon entering the door you know you are have entered a music mecca. This place in rockin with a capital “R”. The entryway is plastered with a huge poster announcing the dates of the upcoming season of live music. One more step brings you into the full bar area, where you will be immersed with amplified jukebox tunes…. I was greeted with the sounds of Guns and Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle.”
When I asked to interview Jeff about his bar, his background and his emphasis on live music, he simply pointed to the sign behind the bar that reads, “It’s all about the music.” And for this bar owner and his guests, enough said – that is the simple truth. His personal listening favorites include Pink Floyd and the Beatles. Bechtel says you will seldom see a country band at the affectionately named thee O.P. Most bands that play are rock and classic rock.
One of Bechtel’s favorite cover bands, The Olson Dunn Band, is going to appear at thee O.P. on Sunday, April 25th at 3 p.m. Why are these guys his favorites? “Because they play tunes I don’t hear other cover bands playing and they play covers better than anyone else who plays here.”
Be sure to follow the dishntunes.com food n fun calendar for upcoming live music gigs appearing the O.P.

Former Platters performer Sonny Bryant to appear at Elkader Opera House
Thursday, February 18th, 2010
Sometimes it is interesting how sad news for some can lead to enjoyment for many. This past January, Elkader residents Harry and Diane Erickson were visiting Harry’s brother, John, at a hospital in Mankato, Minnesota. Unfortunately, during the couple’s visit John was diagnosed with stage four Lymphoma. The diagnosis is of course very upsetting for the family and has led to many life altering decisions for the group, the most significant of which may be the Minnesota Erickson’s decision to temporarily move in with Harry and Diane, in Elkader. This decision was made to facilitate the medical treatments John is receiving in Dubuque.
Back in January, while the four of them were visiting in the hospital room, John’s hospital roommate, Sonny Bryant was noticeably humming to the point when Diane felt it necessary to comment on his soothing sounds. Bryant explained he was getting ready for his “gig” scheduled to begin in a few hours.
Super Bummed for dishntunes fav 17 Candle
Friday, January 1st, 2010So sad for 17 Candle band members and even more sad for the Capital One Bowl game attendees, in Orlando and the national viewing audience. 17 candle did not perform live today because of the muddy field conditions. The bowl officials did not allow the half time stage to be constructed and the upcoming, nationally recognized band was disappointingly stopped short of their performance. This is according to their Facebook fan site status. 17 Candle says details will be coming soon to their website.
