Lakeview Pizza worth a look here and then a taste there

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

A few weeks ago we had the chance to check out the very busy Lakeview Bar and Restaurant on the gorgeous Lake Gremore, just north of Prairie Du Chien. I think Toby Keith had places like the Lakeview in mind with his song, ” I love this bar.” Immediately when I walked into the Lakeview, I thought to my bar-lovin’ self, I love this bar. It was spacious but filled with a nice chatty crowd with plenty of room for the dining crowd.

This is a place that simultaneously and comfortably pleases the bar-goers and families out for a meal. With family and friends in tow we opted for the dining area and enjoyed two huge pizzas. Check out their menu here. Lakeview has an excellent nightly specials list. The Lakeview is a hopping spot. The parking lot was packed but we found a table right away and did not wait long at all for our mega pizzas.

Blue Burgers at Rod n Cal’s

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Editors note:Welcome Marge Banse to the dnt contributing crew!

I have never been a fan of blue cheese salad dressing- but I have to tell you- Blue Cheese Burgers are a whole different concept.  I experienced my first Blue Burger cuisine in an upscale brewhaus in the theater district of Chicago about 8 years ago, and have been seriously hooked ever since.  But trying to find one around here has been pretty slim pickin’s, until now.

Callie McDonald, co-owner and chef at Rod and Cal’s, in Strawberry Point knows how to grill them to perfection.  And for an added twist, she tops them  with green olives.  I know- I was a little skeptic at first too.  I even asked for them on the side so I could squeeze them in as I ate.  But after the first bite- I was begging for more.  The super salty olives, melted into the hot blue cheese, smothered over a fat juicy burger- nestled on a big hearty bun to soak it all up……just as good if not better than  what I remember from the theater district.

Rod and Cal’s goes one step further by serving it up with a hearty order of homemade fresh fries, seasoned to perfection.  Washed it down with a fine bottle of Fat Tire or New Castle Brown Ale, and well…you no longer need to drive to Chicago for the brewhaus cuisine.
