As usual The Opera House Players are working tirelessly to put together another outstanding spring drama production. This year they are taking the show
” Death By Chocolate” to the Elkader Opera House stage.   This comedic, murder mystery is a sure crowd pleaser.  If your into chocolate,  humorous sarcasm and a good mystery  you simply must see the Opera House Player’s, “Death by Chocolate” production.  Full “Death By Chocolate” overview.

Eulenspiel Puppets at the Elkader Opera HouseThe Opera House Board is pleased to announce a three day residency by the Eulenspiegel Puppet Theater from West Branch, Iowa. The Eulenspiegel (OIL-N-SPEEGEL) Puppets delight audiences with a large repertoire of international folktales and historical fiction. The puppeteers draw on their 30 plus years of experience to teach puppet-making and performance techniques. While at the Opera House the fourth grade students from Central will be trained as puppeteers and take part in puppet making workshops.  On Friday, March 11 the students will have the opportunity to share what they have learned when elementary students from Central, Clayton Ridge, Ed-Co, and MFL MarMac attend their performances at 10:30 and 1:30.  Limited ($5) seating will available for the general public to join in the fun. This educational opportunity is funded in part with a grant from the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, and the National Endowment for the Arts, funds from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust and the generous donations of local businesses.

According to Lee Akin owner of the Elkader Cinema, True Grit has been nominated for 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay!

The Osterdock Store owned and operated by the wonderfully gracious Elaine Bierman, has added a salad bar to their monthly, Prime Rib Dinner nights. They added the salad bar on New Year’s Eve and the crowd loved it. Prime Rib is on the Osterdock Store’s menu this Saturday, January 29th and then again on the Saturday Feb 12th for their big Valentine’s Celebration.

This is a new one woman show from the side splittingly funny, award winning, comedian, Ettta May.  The 21st century family is deathly ill and Dr. Etta has just the cure.  This is a two act play staged as a seminar has you laughing one minute and crying the next.

The star of the show, Etta May is a regular on CMT, makes appearances on the syndicated Bob and Tom show and is a favorite on XM and Sirus comedy channels.  Etta May is the winner of the coveted,  Female Comic of the year award. This show has a PG-13 rating.

A special event to commemorate the music and spirit of Jon-Jon Stravers. With a variety of special musical guests, including vocalist Kristina Castaneda with Lisa Stravers, Folko Landvocgt, Kevin Dohse, Mike Obmascher, with Jay Anderson and Terry Nirva on percussion playing the music of Jon Stravers Jr. & Sr.

Show starts at 7pm. Tickets available at door: $20 adult. $5 youth 16 & under (or low income).

Silent Auction will be held – items can be donated. Funds raised at this event will benefit the HeartSong Music Project, a project to keep the music, poetry and dreams of Jon-Jon Stravers alive.

Big Blue Sky started as a father-son duo in the mid-90’s by Jon Stravers Sr and Jon-Jon Stravers. Their musical style includes the influence of folk, bluegrass, blues, and reggae. In their music they seek a closer connection to the planet, and indeed their musical writing comes from the inspiration of wild places and a celebration of our natural heritage and the natural rhythms of life.

This inclusive musical effort has expanded in recent years and continued after the death of Jon-Jon in September of 2007.
