Former Platters performer Sonny Bryant to appear at Elkader Opera House

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

bryantSometimes it is interesting how sad news for some can lead to enjoyment for many.  This past January, Elkader residents Harry and Diane Erickson were visiting Harry’s brother, John, at a hospital in Mankato, Minnesota.  Unfortunately, during the couple’s visit John was diagnosed with stage four Lymphoma.   The diagnosis is of course very upsetting for the family and has led to many life altering decisions for the group, the most significant of which may be the Minnesota Erickson’s decision to temporarily move in with Harry and Diane, in Elkader.  This decision was made to facilitate the medical treatments John is receiving in Dubuque.

Back in January, while the four of them were visiting in the hospital room, John’s hospital roommate, Sonny Bryant was noticeably humming to the point when Diane felt it necessary to comment on his soothing sounds.  Bryant explained he was getting ready for his “gig” scheduled to begin in a few hours.

09 KCTN Pork Cook-OFF Contest  Tasty as Ever

1st Place Winner:Tuscan Roast Pork Tenderloin presented by Joan Parker of Garnavillo

1st Place Winner:Tuscan Roast Pork Tenderloin presented by Joan Parker of Garnavillo

As usual, I thoroughly enjoyed judging the 16th Annual KCTN Radio Pork Cook-Off held at Johnson’s Reception Hall in Elkader, Thursday evening, October 29th, 2009. My judging partners were the scrutinizing Stacy Moser, representing the Old Man River Brewery and Restaurant in McGregor, and discriminating Jane Thein, editor of the Guttenberg Press. The contest drew its normal huge crowd of diners.  Over the past month, the radio station collected 50 qualifying pork containing recipe submissions.  From the submissions, eight entries were randomly selected to participate as finalists in the Pork Cook- Off Contest.  All of the  recipes can be viewed on the KCTN website.  We will place the winning recipes below.

Mike McAbee, a professional musician and standup comic, a sensitive “American Idol”

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Editor’s note: I wrote this a few years ago but I think this pretty well sums up an artist who I think is one of our region’s own great performers

Mike McAbee sings and tells jokes in bars, at private parties and on stages throughout the upper Mississippi River Valley. He claims two towns as home, Frankville, Iowa and Stevens Point WI. Born in Dodgeville, WI he is the son of Roger and SuAnn Mcabee. He has one sister, Dawn and a son, Abe.

He is a “professional” musician and comic, meaning he has made the deliberate and, as he defines it, “pragmatic” decision to give up his career as a trucker and to put on shows three times a week. McAbee, an accomplished songwriter, puts on quite a different show.  He likes to play what he describes as lyrically driven songs.

16 to Life Screening in Elkader

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

McGregor residents have to be smiling these days knowing their town simply shines on the silver screen. This was evident this past Thursday evening, in Elkader, when the movie “16 to Life” was shown at both the Elkader Cinema and the Elkader Opera House. The movie was shot on location in 2007 on McGregor’s Mississippi River banks.

Thursday, members of the cast and crew, including the film’s star, Hallee Hirsh, were on hand, as more than 600 people attended the Elkader screenings. Opera House Manager Kay Moser was absolutely thrilled when Elkader won the opportunity to be Northeast Iowa’s show off point for this new Iowa movie.

The First Ever Taste of dishntunes.com is a Huge Success

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

taste of dishntunes crowdThe first ever A Taste of Dishntunes.com was held at the beautifully remodeled Johnson’s Reception Hall on May 19. The event featured samples from Dishntunes.com member establishments including a dozen Northeast Iowa and Southwest Wisconsin restaurants, bars, wineries and coffee shops. With a downloaded dishntunes.com E-Coupon attendees bought 10 tasting tickets for $10.

The crowd sampled and enjoyed great music from the very entertaining Bill Stock of Greeley, IA. The hall was decorated with beautiful floral arrangements by Harvest Thyme of Elkader.
The official Taste of Dishntunes.com award was given to Stolen Moments of Monona, IA, which collected the most tasting tickets by serving the most samples. Beth Diers’ home-based business served up 22 dozen delectable Delite Bites and plenty of cheesecake to the crowd. Diers’ comments, “The event was classy, well organized, prepared for by dish-n-tunes and by the vendors participating.  I believe this event is now a must have event for years to come for our area!  Johnson’s renovations are spectacular, and it was delightful to have live music during the event.  I am elated for the exposure this event brought to our business, Stolen Moments.  That alone was gratifying,  to be named the Taste of Dish-n-Tunes.com is humbling.  I’m honored to have been in the company of such wonderful restaurants in the NE Iowa, SW Wisconsin region.  It was a great time!”
“This is some of the best food I’ve ever had,” said Dan, a visitor from the Quad Cities. Other attendees left satisfied and inquiring when dishntunes.com would repeat the event.  A Taste of Dishntunes.com attendees enjoyed generous portions of prime rib, pizza, appetizers, meatballs, reubens, Philly steak and chicken sandwiches, brick oven fired pizza, smoked chicken alfredo, marinated turkey breast, bratwursts, appetizers, bloody marys, various microbrews, wine, coffee and more.
“I’m thrilled with the response,” said Joleen Jansen, owner of Dishntunes.com. “Our goal was to provide plenty of exposure for our participating member establishments to their many potential customers. I would say ‘mission accomplished.’”  The hall was constantly full with sampling guests during the three hour event.  “I hope this experience will convert the event-goers into customers of the participating establishments.”
“I’d like to thank each of our participating member establishments for gambling the first time with Dishntunes.com on this venture, as well as the people who spread the word and came to check it out,” said Jansen. “People were asking for us to do this again next year.”
The Dishntunes.com participating members included Bill’s Boat Landing of Clayton, IA; Buckhorn Bar & Grill of Prairie du Chien, WI; Eagles Landing Winery of Marquette, IA; Graffitti’s of Edgewood, IA; Johnson’s Restaurant and Willow Creek Wine and Garden of Elkader, IA; The Irish Shanti of Gunder, IA; The Luana Tavern of Luana, IA; McGregor Beer & Bratz Garden, McGregor Coffee Roasters and Old Man River Restaurant & Brewery of McGregor, IA; and Stolen Moments of Monona, IA. Flower arrangements for the event were provided by Harvest Thyme of Elkader.

Local Tavern Operator Drew Armstrong and Crew Make a Bold Move

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Drew’s Bar and Grille on downtown Elkader’s Bridge St. is a classic American tavern, crowded with burger lovers over the lunch hour, the “after work” regulars most weekday evenings, and a younger set late into the evening on Friday and Saturday nights. Andrew ‘Drew’ Armstrong and his mom Ann own and operate this bar business with the help of Drew’s wife, Kara, and his sister Chelsea. All are Elkader natives and Central grads. Drew and crew have been very satisfied with the steady business they have enjoyed since they opened the bar in 2006.

Drew and Kara are ’04 graduates and were high school sweethearts. They married shortly after high school and gave birth to their first child, baby Oakley about eight weeks ago. Besides helping at the bar, Kara also works at Dollar General but seems really quite content to spend most of her time with newborn, Oakley.

In high school Drew dreamed to someday own his own sports bar. For a while after high school he worked at the Isle of Capri before the opportunity came up for him, in 2006, to begin work on his dream by buying the bar business formerly known as The Hot Spot. The bar is located behind Pedritti’s Bakery on Bridge Street. Drew rents the space for Drew’s Bar and Grille from Christopher Reimer, who owns the building.
